Dental implants: Oral hygiene protocol

How to keep your implants (& mouth) clean & healthy…

Having dental implants doesn’t mean you can throw your toothbrush in the bin! With implants, you still have to take care of them, just as take care of your natural teeth, to ensure that they last a lifetime and function effectively.

Some oral hygiene rules stay the same as with normal teeth. For example, it’s important that you brush your teeth twice a day. You should also floss once or twice a day, so there’s no bacterial microfilm plaque or tartar buildup.

For fixed denture wearers, though, you may need a different brush than a normal toothbrush. Make sure you get a brush that suits your requirements. For Four Under One or fixed dental implant solutions, you’ll most likely need interdental brushes so that you can reach the hard to reach places between and underneath the teeth to maintain good oral hygiene.

It is also imperative that you visit your dentist every six months for a professional scale and clean, especially if you’ve had extensive dental work performed. After all, you’ve made the commitment to have the implant procedure, so it only makes sense to look after them for the long run.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
