Sometimes life doesn’t always go as planned. Things happen: we drop our dentures on the floor; someone sits on our dentures; we bite into something unexpectedly hard, and so on. When these events happen, it’s vital that you call Dentures Plus immediately and book in for an emergency denture repair.
Here are some of the more common reasons you may need to repair your dentures urgently.
The denture is fractured
It is quite common for full dentures and some simple acrylic partial dentures to fracture. This often happens after they have been dropped to the floor or the denture wearer has energetically bitten into brittle or tough food, causing the denture to break. At other times, a fracture may be the result of wear and tear or fatigue to a denture that perhaps has not been made with the best design. Alternatively, the underlying gums may have shrunk a little, causing the denture to be unsupported. The good news though is that mostly, they are easily repaired, providing the fit is still correct.
The denture clasp has broken
When the clasp has broken, usually you will immediately lose the retention and stability of your denture, as the clasp is what holds it in place. When this happens, a dental prosthetist or dental technician can add a new clasp to the denture. Sometimes though, the clasp doesn’t actually affect the experience of wearing your denture as it may already receive adequate support from other teeth in your mouth. If this is the case, one of our technicians will simply file down the area that has been broken so that the surface is nice and smooth. This is also a cost effective solution.
The tooth fractured or came off
Occasionally a false tooth can pop off the denture if it has come across extreme force, usually the result of heavily biting. If you actually have the part of the tooth that fractured off, keep it with you and bring it along to the clinic so that we may be able to reattach the tooth. If you no longer have the tooth with you, our technicians will try and find the same shape, colour and mould of the tooth to blend in with the others.
Denture relines
Sometimes you may be experiencing problems or discomfort with your dentures that may require immediate attention, although not technically an “emergency”. It may simply be a case of discomfort caused by ill-fitting dentures. Even if this is the case, it is imperative that you book into the clinic as soon as possible so that any minor discomfort or irritation on your gums or mouth does not become a chronic problem.
Over time, denture wearers experience what is known as bone resorption, which is where the bony structure of the mouth changes slightly. It is important to maintain regular check-ups with your dental prosthetist so that they can adjust your dentures accordingly. This procedure is known as a denture reline. This involves us giving you a current fitting surface to your existing denture, to keep up with these changes in the mouth. We recommend you get a reline when you feel more food getting inside the denture than normal, or when you start to feel the denture drop when talking or eating.
